🔥 Body Fat Calculator
Estimate your body fat percentage from your body measurements using metric or imperial units.
Use abdominal circumference at the navel for men, and natural waist plus hip circumference for women. See the measurement instructions below. Weight does not affect this calculation.
Calculate Your Body Fat
What Is Body Fat Percentage and How Is It Calculated?
Body fat percentage describes the proportion of body weight that is fat. ToolXone estimates this percentage using the historical Hodgdon–Beckett circumference-based body-density equations published in 1984, followed by the separate Siri density-to-body-fat conversion. The calculation uses height and neck circumference, abdominal circumference for men, and natural waist and hip circumference for women. It is an estimate, not a direct measurement or medical diagnosis.
What Is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage describes how much of total body weight is estimated to be body fat. The remaining body weight includes lean tissues such as muscle, bone, organs and body water. Body fat is a normal part of human body composition and is necessary for functions including energy storage, insulation and hormone-related processes.
How Does a Body Fat Calculator Work?
This calculator first estimates body density from circumference measurements and height. It then converts that density estimate to body fat percentage using the Siri equation. Body weight is not an input to these equations; the displayed weight fields do not affect the result.
What Is the U.S. Navy Body Fat Method?
The name refers here to the historical circumference equations developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center. ToolXone uses their body-density equations followed by Siri conversion. It does not implement a current military qualification assessment, official measurement rounding, or military pass/fail standards. ToolXone is not endorsed by the U.S. Navy, Department of Defense, or the cited authors or institutions.
Calculation Formulas
All measurements below are in centimeters, and log10 means the base-10 logarithm. Let H be height, N neck circumference, A male abdominal circumference at the navel, W female natural waist circumference, and P female hip circumference.
Male estimated density: D = 1.0324 − 0.19077 × log10(A − N) + 0.15456 × log10(H)
Female estimated density: D = 1.29579 − 0.35004 × log10(W + P − N) + 0.22100 × log10(H)
Siri conversion, applied separately to either density estimate: Estimated body fat (%) = 495 / D − 450
D is expressed in g/cm³. The logarithm arguments must be positive. ToolXone rejects non-finite results and estimates outside its implemented 0–70% output range; this software range is not a healthy-range recommendation.
Measurements Needed for Men
For the male calculation, use height, neck circumference and abdominal circumference.
- Height: Measure standing height without shoes, standing upright with your head level and looking forward.
- Neck: With your head upright and shoulders relaxed, measure just below the larynx (Adam’s apple), not over it. Position the tape perpendicular to the neck’s long axis and avoid including the shoulder muscles. Keep the tape as close to horizontal as anatomically feasible.
- Male abdominal circumference: Use the field labelled Waist for abdominal circumference at the level of the navel. Keep the tape horizontal and measure at the end of a normal, relaxed exhalation without drawing in your abdomen.
Measurements Needed for Women
For the female calculation, use height, neck circumference, natural waist and hip circumference.
- Female waist: Measure the natural waist at the narrowest abdominal circumference, generally between the navel and the lower end of the breastbone. Keep the tape horizontal, with arms at your sides, and measure after a normal, relaxed exhalation.
- Female hip: Measure around the greatest protrusion of the buttocks, keeping the tape horizontal. Avoid shaping or compressive clothing.
Metric and Imperial Body Fat Calculations
The equations use centimeters and base-10 logarithms. Metric inputs are supplied in centimeters. Imperial height and circumference inputs are converted using 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. The calculation retains numerical precision until the result is displayed to one decimal place. It does not apply military half-inch rounding.
How to Measure Your Waist and Neck
Use a flexible, non-stretch tape held against the body without compressing the skin. Repeat measurements to check consistency and use the same sites and technique for later comparisons. Enter your measured values without military rounding.
Why Sex Is Used in the Calculation
The historical method provides separate male and female regression equations. The selected sex determines which equation and required circumference measurements this calculator uses.
Body Fat Percentage vs BMI
BMI and body fat percentage are related but different measurements. BMI is calculated from height and weight, while body fat percentage attempts to estimate the proportion of body weight that is fat. A person can have the same BMI as another person while having a different body composition.
Body Fat Percentage vs Body Weight
Body weight tells you how much a person weighs, while body fat percentage estimates how much of that weight is body fat. Two people with the same body weight can have different body fat percentages because their amounts of muscle, fat and other tissues can differ.
Is a Body Fat Calculator Accurate?
Circumference equations predict body composition rather than measure fat directly. Tape placement, tension, posture and breathing can affect the inputs. Prediction error can also depend on body shape, fat distribution and how closely an individual resembles the populations used to develop and evaluate the equations. Siri conversion uses a two-compartment density model with assumptions about fat and fat-free tissue. The displayed decimal place does not establish the estimate’s accuracy.
What Does a Body Fat Percentage Result Mean?
The result is an estimated percentage, not a health classification, athletic-status assessment, recommended target, or military qualification result. ToolXone does not assign a body-fat category from this estimate.
How to Use the Body Fat Calculator
Select your sex and choose Metric or Imperial units. Enter your height, neck circumference and waist circumference. If using the female calculation, also enter hip circumference. Select Calculate Body Fat to receive the estimated body fat percentage.
Body Fat and Fitness Tracking
Estimated body fat percentage can be used as one measurement when tracking changes in body composition over time. For meaningful comparisons, use consistent measurement techniques and similar conditions rather than focusing on a single result.
Body Fat Is an Estimate, Not a Medical Diagnosis
The result from a circumference-based calculator is an estimate of body composition. It does not diagnose a medical condition and should not be used by itself to determine whether a person is healthy, unhealthy or in need of a particular treatment.
Who Can Use This Body Fat Calculator?
This tool is intended for adult informational use. The historical equations were developed using military samples; their performance is not established here for every population or individual. This page does not establish their suitability for children, pregnancy, or clinical decision-making.
